A Humble Merry Christmas!
Growing up in the USA, the concept and the actions called humility receive low praise. As a value, it is praised, but it does not appear to be part of the cultures desired posture.
The USA values individualism, Superman, Batman, Lone Ranger ideals where doing everything all by myself, my way, promotes a sense of pride and self-esteem that appear to run counter to the value humility.
Do you wish to be great? Then begin by being. Do you desire to construct a vast and lofty fabric? Think first about the foundations of humility. The higher your structure is to be, the deeper must be its foundation. – Saint Augustine
What is humility and is there a fake one?
Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it is thinking of yourself less.
It is conscious self-examination. It is the skill and practice of healthy suspicion toward yourself and a practice of giving the benefit of doubt to those with whom you disagree. It includes the courage to take on difficult, tedious and or unglamorous jobs especially without anyone noticing or want for their praise. Humility includes always noticing to give credit wherever and whenever it is due without it meaning anything about you. It is honoring your word as yourself, keeping your promises and renegotiating those promises you cannot keep while recognizing in others the courage it takes to do so. Perhaps the most difficult part is the ability, the willingness to turn away from despair while taking on intimidation, uncertainty and fear in an unflappable manner, knowing them for the imposters they are.
